SK hi-tech battery materials Poland started its activities in Poland as a subsidiary of the global corporation
SK Group, which originates from South Korea and is a pioneer in the field of energy,
chemicals and modern technology.
Factory opening
2021 was an extremely intense year for us.
In March, we started building another factory, and two months later, in May, more plots were purchased for the third and fourth phase of the investment. After 21 months of construction, production also began in the first factory, which was officially opened on October 6.
But that’s not all, for us, 2021 was not only about expanding the project. We were equally involved in the life of the local community. We took many actions aimed at supporting culture and development in the region. Among other things, we created a patronage class at the Sosnowiec Automotive and Mechatronics Technical School and, for the first time, became the Patron of the Michał Spisak International Festival.
In 2021, we received many awards, including “Investor Without Borders” at the European Economic Congress Katowice, the Investor Award at the European Forum for the Future, and the title of Brand Ambassador of Katowice Special Economic Zone S.A.
2020 is the time to create and implement a branding campaign to become recognizable on the local market.
We started with the slogan “Hi, Poland! Something new is waiting for you”. We also created video materials for recruitment purposes, aimed at presenting and promoting SK hi-tech battery materials Poland as a new entity on the market.
The second half of the year was a time of intensive recruitment campaign and hiring of staff for the soon-to-be-opened separator factory, the first in Europe. In December, SK was joined by over 40 new employees.
Onboarding
Construction work – phase I
Our story began in January 2019, when SK hi-tech battery materials Poland officially registered its business. In June of the same year, the purchase was finalized and the notarial deed was signed for the first and second phase of our investment in the Katowice Special Economic Zone located in the Tucznawa district of Dąbrowa Górnicza. The construction of the first factory began in October 2019.
At the beginning of 1953, Chey Jong-gun – the founder of what is later known as SK Group, opened a textile factory – Sunkyung Textile. It was one of the main points of the post-war reconstruction of South Korea. In the 1960s, Sunkyung Textile acquired Overseas Merchandise Corporation, later renamed Overseas Textile, to gain greater control over the supply chain and begin producing acetate threads. After the death of SK’s founder, Chey Jong-gun, in 1973, his younger brother, Chey Jong-hyon, took over as president. In the 1970s, Sunkyung Textile further expanded its portfolio of subsidiaries, including: General Trading Company, which allowed, for example, the export of raw polyester cotton to Indonesia. As the company grew, there was a need to create a central system which message would be common to existing and future SK subsidiaries.
Nomination of President Chey Jong-hyon
In 1979, the 1st edition of SKMS (SK Management System) was created. It became the cornerstone of further development of SK. In the 1980s, the company expanded into the petrochemical market with the acquisition of Korea Oil Corporation. The 1990s were mainly marked by the entry into the telecommunications market, which involved the acquisition of companies such as Korea Mobile Telecommunications Service. In January 1998, all SK subsidiaries adopted a new Corporate Identity and were given new names with the prefix “SK”. This is how a new system was created, which is still in force today. Also in 1998, after his father’s death, Chey Tae-won took over as SK president. In 2011, SK innovation was established, which brings together companies from the refining, lubricants and chemical sectors. SK innovation owns SK ie technology – the parent company of SKBMP. SK ie technology has two main areas of activity: the production of separators for lithium-ion batteries (LiBS/CCS) and flexible screens for electronic devices (FCW). In 2019, the company SK hi-tech battery materials Poland, SKBMP for short, was established.
